Plan an unforgettable season

Trip Planning

Putting your dream of living season by season into action can be both exciting and overwhelming at the same time. I have been living 6 months at a time for almost 5 years now and as you can imagine, I've picked up a few tips and tricks along the way. I want to help you accomplish your season dreams by offering you some of my best travel tips on how to work, save and still have fun, season to season, year on year.

My mission as The Ski Nomad is to help people start and maintain an unforgettable season f memories. I am doing this by ensuring you have everything you need for your season, making season life as effortless and enjoyable as possible.

Round Map Cutting

Flights

When planning a season, one of the first things I always consider are my flights. Are they part of my employment package or do I need to organise them myself? If you're to make the most of your journey to your resort destination and the pennies in your pocket it's definitely best to book in advance to take advantage of the good deals. To help me find the best deals, I usually use Skyscanner.

Insurance

Once you've got your flights booked and you've decided what kind of activities you're going to do on your way and while in resort it's time to get yourself insured.

Its very easy to leave this until last minute or even forget about it, thinking you could save some pennies. However after a couple of travel accidents, I have now learned to never leave home without it.

I personally recommend ERV insurance for those of you who are planning an epic ski season because they offer different options depending on what your employer covers you for and the type of skiing/snowboarding you think you'll be doing.

For anyone planning a non-ski adventure season or multi-destination travel to resort, I'd recommend World Nomads simply because they have the best adventure travel coverage.

Whoever you chose to insure you, it is most important to make sure you are covered for all the activities you plan to do and for the duration of your trip.

Accomodations

As soon as I have my transport sorted, I now start planning where to stay. Its a good idea to decide your final destination first as it will be where you're spending most of the season. Again, if it isn't included in your employment or you'd prefer to live by yourself, now is a good time to find your home for the next 6 or so months. Consider proximity to work, your favourite activities such as the ski lifts/shuttle and night life. Have a think about who and how many people you'd like to live with. Finally, do your research and set yourself a budget. Nobody wants to end up not being able to ay rent after a few too many apres ski beers.

Once you've booked your flights and transport to resort, the next step is to decide where you're going to stay on the way. Perhaps you have family to visit? fancy a camping/tramping trip? Planning to explore in a van for a few days? Now is the time to get stuck in to your extended layover plans.

For Hotels and Hostels, I usually use booking.com to help me find great deals.

If you're planning on staying somewhere slightly longer, I'd recommend Airbnb for your more bouji affordable nights. Some Airbnb even offer incredible experiences with them too!

Undoubtedly one of the most important parts of your trip will be the gear that you take with you. Leaving something behind can be the biggest hump in your trip making life much more difficult than it needed to be.

When I first became a seasonaire I packed two giant suitcases that weighed more than I do and I used less than half of the things I brought all season. Now I have figured out the bare basics of what to bring and fit everything I need for the whole 6months of winter into my 65L backpack and little ski bag.

You gear will make or break you, so here's my guide to the essentials of every season, and for more tailored gear advice, check out my different packing list articles (coming soon..)
